EDMONTON, AB (May 15, 2018) –  Our city is about to become the volleyball capital of Canada from May 16-22 as the 2018 Volleyball Canada Nationals take over the Edmonton EXPO Centre.

Volleyball teams from every province in Canada have been battling it out all season to reach Nationals, and this week they compete in their respective age divisions to become champions. The Edmonton EXPO Centre will be packed full of action with 54 courts and more than 12,500 volleyball athletes.

“We are excited to be hosting our largest Nationals ever in this excellent facility. In addition to more than 3,000 matches played by 864 club teams from across the country, we will also host international matches that will see our men’s and women’s National Indoor teams and men’s Para team compete at a very high level,” says Mark Eckert, President and CEO of Volleyball Canada. “Edmonton is one of our favourite sport destinations, and we’re looking forward to this action-packed week of volleyball at its best!”

Internationals men’s friendly matches will be played against Mexico on May 16 and 18, and the international women’s team will play in the NORCECA Women’s Nations League Challenge Cup tournament May 17 to 20.  The Challenge Cup is part of the women’s qualification process for the new FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which is being launched this year. Participating countries are Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, and host Canada.

“We are proud to welcome Volleyball Canada to the Edmonton EXPO Centre. With 54 volleyball courts and an international tournament, their event is perfectly suited to leverage the 522,000 square feet of space available in this community asset,” says Arlindo Gomes, General Manager of the Edmonton EXPO Centre. “Events such as this bring thousands of visitors to our city and generate valuable economic impact for our community.”

Tickets for the national tournaments, either Tournament 1 (May 17-19) or Tournament 2 (May 20-22), can be purchased onsite. Tickets for international matches can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
